Making the Most of Your Library Collection

Date and Time:
Thursday, February 1, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The State Library offers this workshop on a variety of topics and trends in collection maintenance. Participants are encouraged to email questions to the Continuing Education Consultant prior to the event. The day will include a tour of the newly renovated Richland County Main Library. Lunch will be provided at this event.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will gain a better understanding of current collection maintenance procedures for print and electronic materials.

Participants will increase their awareness of readers' advisory practices in genre collections.

Presenters:

Rebecca Vnuk of IndiePicks book review publication will speak on the collection development process and how to respond to community needs. She specializes in Reader's Advisory and has written four books, including The Weeding Handbook: A Shelf-by-Shelf Guide.

Jennifer Lohmann, former public librarian and current NoveList consultant, will go over some of the tips and tricks in NoveList for collection development, including keeping up with genre trends, filling holes in your collection, making sure you know about new books in hard to keep track of series, and marketing those fabulous books you've just added to your collection.

Gretchen Maultsby and Jessica Herzog, of the collection management department of Spartanburg County Public Libraries, will speak on how to manage streaming and pay-on-demand electronic collections.
