POSTPONED: Authors of SC featuring Dr. Walter Curry

Statement from the South Carolina State Library on COVID-19:

The South Carolina State Library has been monitoring the outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 (now pandemic) and is working closely with our partners and event organizers to help manage its impact on our library community statewide.

We have made the decision to postpone this Authors of SC speaking engagement. If you have any questions about a specific event coordinated by the South Carolina State Library, please contact the individual State Library staff member listed for the event.

In this challenging time, the fundamental guiding principle we have used, and will continue to use, is that we will follow the guidance and policies as established by the State of South Carolina. The South Carolina State Library encourages individuals to pay close attention to the SC DHEC COVID-19 website for additional updates and information.

Join us Saturday, April 11 at noon for an author talk featuring Dr. Walter Curry. He will share with us his most recently published book, “The Thompson Family: Untold Stories from the Past (1830-1960).” The book contains several narratives, including a slave who purchased his freedom, a relative who served as a cook in the Confederate Army, a young relative who was tragically murdered, and a sharecropper who became a prominent soil conservationist. Overall, the book narrates the generational diversity of the Thompson family and the common themes of civic engagement, morality, virtue, struggle, and achievement. In 2019, Dr. Curry received the 2019 International African American Historical and Genealogy Society Book Award in the Non-Fiction Category-Genealogy for this book.

This event will take place at 314 Chesterfield St S, Aiken, SC 29801 where books will be available for purchase and signing. If you cannot join us in person, please join us live on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/user/scstatelibrary.

This Authors of SC event is a partnership between Aiken County Public Library and ReadSC, the South Carolina Center for the Book. For more information, please contact Andersen Cook, ReadSC Coordinator at (803) 545-4432 or acook@statelibrary.sc.gov or Jessica Christian at jessicac@abbe-lib.org.
