Management and Leadership and Their Roles for an Inclusive Organization

Leadership and management are challenging responsibilities in any organizational setting. In this session, we will review the various roles and styles of leadership and management and how both engage their organization. Attendees will learn about how to begin to sustain an inclusive work environment by understanding organizational culture and its impact on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) librarians and staff. This presentation will utilize library focused examples and engage attendees in understanding and applying relevant models and frameworks toward an inclusive workplace.

  • An overview of fundamental leadership styles and their differences to management
  • An understanding of organizational culture and how it impacts recruitment and retention of BIPOC librarians and staff
  • Tangible efforts leadership and management can take toward an inclusive workplace
  • Learn about relevant models and frameworks that will support organizations committed to inclusion

Presenter:

Nikhat Jehan Ghouse (pronounced NICK-khath Juh-haa Goss) is an Organization Development (OD) Consultant and facilitator with Jehan Consulting as well as Associate Librarian for the Social Sciences and Coordinator of the Diversity Alliance Residency Program at American University (AU). She works with organizations, including public and academic libraries, state, regional and national associations. Nikhat received her Master of Science in Organization Development from AU, her MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh, and a BA in History from Cleveland State University. Nikhat has over 20 years of professional experience working in libraries and five-plus years of experience consulting at the intersection of libraries and organizational development.
