SECC Session: Self-Care 101: Battling Stress, Burnout, and Vicarious Trauma to Live Your Best Librarian Life

Description:

The 2021 Southeast Collaborative Online Conference is a collective effort by the State Library of North Carolina, South Carolina State Library, Georgia Public Library Service, and Library of Virginia to offer innovative and useful online learning experiences for library staff at all levels through a convenient online conference.

Librarianship can be stressful! With shrinking budgets, challenging patron behaviors, and co-worker conflicts, librarians often find themselves faced with workplace stressors they never anticipated. Second-career librarian Dawn Behrend is a master’s level clinical psychologist and will share tips for librarians to engage in self-care to thrive in their chosen profession. In this session:

  • Participants will recognize signs of burnout and vicarious trauma as well as the physical and emotional impacts of prolonged stress.
  • Participants will develop effective self-care strategies.
  • Participants will learn how to find professional help if needed and ways to become a mental health advocate at their library.

Presenter:

Dawn Behrend is an Instruction and Outreach Librarian at Lenoir-Rhyne University. She holds a B.A. in Psychology, M.A. in Clinical Psychology, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Library Science. Ms. Behrend has worked for 20 years in North Carolina as a Licensed Psychological Associate and is a second career librarian. Ms. Behrend continues to work part-time in private practice in addition to her work as an academic librarian.
