September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World

Please join us on September 10th at 12:00 noon for a special virtual event to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. This program is made possible by the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York, New York. We will remember the victims, heroes, and survivors of 9/11 through personal stories from 9/11 family members Cait LeaveyBrielle Saracini, and John Spade, first responders from the FDNY and PAPD, and a student on 9/11. This virtual event will be hosted by the South Carolina State Library and will give participants an opportunity to ask questions through a live chat with 9/11 Memorial and Museum staff and to share their own memories in a discussion with State Library staff and fellow participants following the program. Participants can join the virtual event via Zoom or view the program at a screening at the State Library.

The South Carolina State Library welcomes people of all abilities to participate in our programs. If you need a reasonable accommodation in order to participate, please contact the event organizer Allie Lovette at alovette@statelibrary.sc.gov or 803-734-7077 two weeks in advance. In addition, the webinar will be interpreted in American Sign Language and captioned. An audio description and Spanish subtitles will also be available.

You are also invited to visit us at the South Carolina State Library to view the exhibit, September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World, an educational exhibition that presents the history of 9/11, its origins, and its ongoing implications through the personal stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks. Told across 14 posters, this exhibition includes archival photographs and images of artifacts from the Museum’s permanent collection. It explores the consequences of terrorism on individual lives and communities at the local, national, and international levels, and encourages critical thinking about the legacies of 9/11. The exhibit will be on display at the State Library from September 10th-November 1st, 2021.
