Event box

The Center for the Book, Speaker at the Center series, will welcome Heather McPherson, Curator of Collections at the SC Military Museum, on Wednesday, July 16th, at 2:30 pm. Heather McPherson has been the Curator of Collections at the South Carolina Military Museum since 2017. She has created exhibits focused on South Carolina airfields, search and rescue air missions, and aviation units. Born and raised in the Midlands, Heather takes pride in preserving the memory of South Carolinians who have served. A self-proclaimed aviation nerd, Heather says the most rewarding aspect of her job is uncovering the personal stories within each object at the museum. On July 16th, Heather will present South Carolina stories of aviation and space exploration.
The SC Military Museum provided some items for the July Display Case, which will be available to view through July.
About the SC Military Museum: South Carolina Military Museum
First established in Sumter County as the National Guard Museum and State Weapons Collection, the South Carolina Military Museum relocated to the capital city of Columbia to better serve its mission of preserving the Palmetto State’s military history.
This new location offered strong partnerships with the South Carolina Military Department and the opportunity to expand the collection. Through the efforts of staff and volunteers, the former National Guard motor pool was transformed into an inviting space for the community to learn their rich military heritage.
Officially recognized by the U.S. Army’s Center for Military History and the National Guard Bureau, the museum highlights South Carolina military history in three galleries. Staff members are available to assist with research inquiries, and the Hugh McLaurin Library and Archive is open by appointment. The museum also hosts community events and offers various STEM-related education programs.
